The Best Picnic Spots in Kruger National Park

The Best Picnic Spots in Kruger National Park

There’s something deeply South African about a picnic in the bush. Whether it’s brewed coffee from a flask at sunrise or a full brunch under shady trees, Kruger’s picnic sites offer a pause between sightings—and often, a few unexpected ones too.

Scattered throughout the park, these stops range from remote and rustic to fully serviced. Here are some of the best picnic spots to include in your route—and why they’re more than just bathroom breaks.

1. Letaba Picnic Site (Letaba Camp)

Tucked just inside the camp itself, Letaba offers more than great food—it offers a front-row seat to the river. With gas braais available and ample seating, it’s perfect for families or longer stops.

You can order something light at Tindlovu Letaba and bring it down to the river’s edge, or pack your own and enjoy it while watching elephants, crocs, or even fish eagles along the banks.

What makes it special:
The view. It’s hard to leave once you’ve settled in.

2. Tshokwane Picnic Site (Between Skukuza and Satara)

Arguably one of Kruger’s most iconic stops, Tshokwane offers a full-on bush kitchen with breakfast, coffee, and famous mince jaffles. Large trees provide great shade, and the constant flow of vehicles means you’re likely to overhear stories of morning lion sightings.

It’s busy but well-run, and a great place to stock up on cold drinks, souvenirs, or toasted sarmies before heading north or south.

What makes it special:
You get that rustic bush feel with the comforts of a small café.

3. Mooiplaas Picnic Site (Near Mopani Camp)

Mooiplaas is one of the quieter picnic sites and is ideal for travellers who want a peaceful, less-trafficked stop. Set beside the Tsendze River, it offers simple tables, shade, and often, visits from nyalas and birds.

It’s a favourite among birdwatchers and photographers who want a calm setting with a high chance of spotting something unexpected in the trees or reeds.

What makes it special:
Stillness, serenity, and sightings without the crowd.

4. Afsaal Picnic Spot (Between Skukuza and Malelane)

Known for its active vervet monkeys (guard your snacks!), Afsaal is a charming and central picnic stop. It has gas braais, tables, a shop, and hot coffee on offer.

It’s ideal for morning drives from southern gates like Crocodile Bridge or Malelane. Many travellers use it as a halfway stop on loops back toward Skukuza.

What makes it special:
Well-positioned for high-traffic areas with a decent chance of predator sightings en route.

5. N’wanetsi Picnic Site (East of Satara)

This hidden gem lies on the eastern edge of Kruger and overlooks the Sweni River. Though facilities are basic, the views are exceptional—and often, you’ll have the place nearly to yourself.

Bring your own food and enjoy a quiet meal while keeping your eyes on the water below. It’s not uncommon to see elephants, birds of prey, or even the odd leopard.

What makes it special:
Wild, remote, and often overlooked by tour groups.

What to Pack for the Perfect Kruger Picnic

Even at sites with restaurants or shops, it’s always best to come prepared. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Cooler bag or box
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Coffee flask
  • Braai tools (if planning to cook)
  • Paper plates and serviettes
  • Binoculars
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Insect repellent
  • Rubbish bags (clean up always)

If you’re starting near Letaba or returning there midday, consider ordering takeaway from Tindlovu Letaba—wraps, muffins, or even a full meal packed to enjoy later.

Slow Down, Unwind, Enjoy the Bush

Picnic sites aren’t just practical—they’re part of the magic of Kruger. They give you time to slow down, stretch, listen to the birds, and appreciate the small things between the big sightings.

So next time you head out on game drive, plan your route around at least one great picnic stop. You might just find your new favourite place in the park.
